Laser Treatments: Things You Really Need to Know
Laser Hair Removal: 7 Things You Really Need to Know
No more razor blades, no more ingrown hairs, no more waxing appointments you keep putting off. Laser hair removal sounds too good to be true—and yet it works. Here’s what you’ll want to know before you start.
Almost everyone who comes to us for the first time for laser hair removal has the same question: Does it really work? The short answer is yes—but there’s more to it than just pressing a button and calling it a day. The better you understand what’s happening, the more realistic your expectations will be, and the greater your satisfaction will be. We’ve listed the seven most important things for you.
1It's a process, not a quick fix
A laser only targets hairs that are currently in their active growth phase. At any given moment, that’s only a portion of all your hairs. That’s why we conduct multiple sessions spread out over time, so that we can treat each hair at the right moment. The results are permanent, though: treated hair follicles do not grow back.
2Howthe Laser Actually Works
The laser emits a pulse of light that is absorbed by the pigment in your hair. That energy is converted into heat, and that heat destroys the hair follicle. The surrounding skin remains unharmed. That’s why laser hair removal works best when there’s a clear contrast between the hair and the skin—although modern diode lasers can now handle a much wider range of skin and hair types than older devices.
3Notall hair and skin are the same
Dark, coarse hair responds the fastest. Very light, gray, or red hair contains little pigment and is more difficult to treat. Your hormones also play a role—think of facial hair that’s hormone-driven. During a consultation, we’ll be honest with you: what’s realistic for your situation? We’d rather be upfront with you from the start than have you be disappointed later.
4Howmany treatments will you need?
For most people, this ranges from six to ten sessions, with a few weeks between each one. After that, one maintenance treatment per year is often sufficient. The exact number depends on your skin, your hair type, the treatment area, and your hormone levels. After the skin analysis, we’ll provide an estimate tailored to you, not based on an average.
5Doesit hurt?
To be honest: it’s not always comfortable, but it’s not nearly as bad as you might think. Most people describe it as a quick snap from a rubber band. Modern lasers have a cooling system that cools the skin during the pulse, making it a lot more pleasant than you might expect. Sensitive areas feel it a bit more, but it’s manageable.
6Preparation and follow-up determine your results
Before your session: don’t wax or epilate in the weeks leading up to it—the hair follicle must be intact. You can shave, though, because the laser targets the root, not the visible hair. And stay out of the sun and avoid tanning beds. After your session, soothe your skin, use a good SPF daily, and give the treated area a break for a while. Sun exposure is your biggest pitfall —both before and after.
7Whya Consultation Makes a Difference
No two sets of skin are alike, which is why we never follow a standard protocol. During a no-obligation consultation, we’ll assess your skin type, your hair, your expectations, and your history. Only then will we develop a plan. That way, you’ll know exactly what to expect—and that’s exactly how it should be.
