How many sessions do you need for laser hair removal?

5-minute read Hi Beauty Helmond

That’s the question we hear most often during an intake session. And the honest answer is: it depends. But we can tell you exactly what it depends on.

The short answer: an average of 6 to 8 treatments

For most areas and skin types, you’ll see a permanent reduction of 80 to 90 percent in hair growth after 6 to 8 treatments. Some people finish sooner, while others need a few extra sessions. Anyone who promises you’ll be permanently done in just 3 treatments isn’t being honest with you.

Why It's Not Possible to Do Everything at Once

Your hair grows in cycles. At any given time, only a portion of your hair follicles are active in the growth phase—and the laser targets only those hairs. The rest are in a resting phase and won’t be targeted until the next session. That’s why we schedule treatments 4 to 8 weeks apart: just enough time to target the next group of hairs as they enter the growth phase.

"Laser hair removal isn't a sprint. Each session targets a new group of hair follicles—that's why consistency works better than rushing."

What Determines the Number of Treatments

1. The Zone

The underarms and bikini line usually respond quickly: the hair there is dark and thick. Facial hair is more sensitive to hormones and often requires more sessions and occasional maintenance treatments.

2. Your hair and skin color

The laser targets pigment in the hair. Dark hair on lighter skin responds the fastest. With the Gentlemax Pro Plus, we can safely treat all skin types—including tanned or dark skin—but very light, gray, or red hair contains too little pigment to respond effectively. We’ll be honest with you about this during the initial consultation.

3. Hormones

Hormonal fluctuations (such as PCOS, pregnancy, or menopause) can trigger new hair growth. Laser treatment is effective in these cases as well—you may just need one maintenance session per year.

Good to Know

After your first treatment, you'll often notice hair falling out as early as 2 to 3 weeks later. At first, it may seem as though the hair is just growing—but in reality, your skin is shedding it.

Here's what your journey will look like

  • Initial Consultation & Quick Test — We’ll examine your skin and hair and customize the device specifically for you.
  • Treatments 1 through 4 — this is where the greatest reduction occurs; many clients already see a 50 to 70 percent reduction in hair growth.
  • Treatments 5 through 8 — the stubborn, finer hairs are targeted.
  • Maintenance, if necessary — for hormone-sensitive areas, 1 session per year.
