Stiff neck and shoulders? Why a massage does more than you think
You know how it is: by the end of the day, your shoulders are practically up to your ears. An evening on the couch helps for a little while—but the next morning, the tension is right back. That’s no coincidence.
Why Does That Tension Keep Coming Back?
Hours spent in front of a screen, stress, always being “on”: your body reacts to this by constantly tensing the muscles in your neck and shoulders slightly. If you don’t do anything about it, that tension becomes your new normal. Muscles shorten, blood flow decreases, and you end up with headaches, fatigue, and an ever-diminishing range of motion.
"Relaxation isn't a luxury you deserve once all your work is done. It's self-care—just like sleep."
What Really Happens During a Massage
A good massage is more than just lying back and relaxing. Targeted pressure improves blood flow, which helps flush out waste products more quickly and restores oxygen to the muscles. Adhesions and muscle knots are released. And just as important: your nervous system switches from “on” mode to recovery mode. That’s when you realize just how much tension you were actually holding onto.
You'll notice the difference after just one treatment
- Right away: more relaxed shoulders, a freer neck, and deeper breathing.
- In the days that followed: fewer (tension) headaches and better sleep.
- With regular practice: tension builds up more slowly—your body “learns” to relax.
Mild muscle soreness a day after a vigorous massage is normal—your muscles have been working hard. Drink plenty of water and take it easy, and you'll really feel the difference afterward.
How often is reasonable?
If tension has been building up for months, a short series of treatments works best: two to three sessions spaced a few weeks apart to really break through the built-up tension. After that, one massage every 4 to 6 weeks is enough for most people to keep it at bay. Would you rather just try it once first? That’s fine too—after just one session, you’ll already notice what you’ve been carrying around all this time.
